Authority Signals

Definition

Authority Signals are observable indicators within content that demonstrate expertise, credibility, and trustworthiness to both human readers and AI systems.

Why it matters

AI doesn’t take your word for it. It looks for proof.

Authority Signals are the elements in your content that show — not tell — that you know what you’re talking about. Named methodologies. Real-world examples drawn from actual practice. Consistent use of industry-specific language. Stats grounded in your own client work. Content that goes deeper than what a two-hour Google session would produce.

The absence of Authority Signals doesn’t mean you lack expertise. It usually means your expertise isn’t visible in a form AI can recognize.

If your content could have been written by anyone, AI treats it that way.

Example

Two blog posts on the same topic: “How to improve employee retention.”

The first covers the basics — communication, culture, benefits. Accurate. Generic. Could have been written by a summer intern with a decent search history.

The second references a specific framework the author developed, names the industries where she’s applied it, and cites a retention pattern she’s tracked across forty clients over six years.

The second post is loaded with Authority Signals. The first has none. When AI builds an answer on retention, it knows which one to trust.
